First Cloud-Native Web assembly PaaS launched by Fermyon

As of June 21st, 2022, Fermyon Technologies announced that they have launched their lightweight open-source application. This technology will be used for creating WebAssembly microservices. The company has described this technology as a "build once, run anywhere" technology. WebAssembly services enable users to run inside browsers and help them solve cloud-based problems whilst ensuring speed and protection. With the help of a robust developer interface, Fermyon integrates the packaging, compilation, version control, deployment, and management of WebAssembly apps and microservices.

The co-founder and CEO of Fermyon, Matt Butcher , has stated that Fermyon aims to bring the ease of Platform-as-a-service (PaaS) to the growing WebAssembly ecosystem. He also added that the firm is passionate about leading the next wave of cloud computing and the virtual and contained machine technologies that are being used today. The technologists from Fermyon also had something to add about this new launch. The co-creator of WebAssembly, Luke Wagner, expressed that WebAssembly technology is very well-tested and mature. It has proven its scale, security and speed in a particular browser throughout its testing. He is confident that this technology will soon make inroads in the cloud and become more credible in the market. He also added that the team of Cloud-native developers at Fermyon add value to this newly built technology.

The CEO Matt Butcher and CTO Radu Matei have been developing container technology for many years. They developed Helm (the Kubernetes package manager used in 70% of all Kubernetes deployments with 3 million monthly downloads and 21,900 GitHub stars), Brigade (the Kubernetes VS Code extension), Open Application Model, CNAB, and other projects as part of Deis and later DeisLabs at Microsoft.

They encountered numerous container-related issues along the way, particularly regarding volume, speed, and cost. As a result, they initially looked into running WebAssembly in Kubernetes, which inspired the development of Krustlet, which is now a part of the CNCF and enables users to run WebAssembly alongside OCI containers. By the time Krustlet was launched, it was evident that WebAssembly was the cornerstone for the upcoming wave of cloud computing. This prompted seven other DeisLabs engineers to depart Microsoft and form Fermyon.

The goal of Fermyon is to enable cloud developers to swiftly create the things they envision producing and concentrate on the code that adds value rather than the necessary foundation code. Spin, Fermyon's first open-source project, was unveiled earlier this year. Within the first six weeks of its release, Spin, a crucial component of Fermyon that makes it simple for users to execute production workloads with WebAssembly, received 1,000 GitHub stars.

By providing a complete WebAssembly-based execution environment and an associated user-friendly Web interface, Fermyon is releasing its platform today, eliminating 90% of the pain, complexity, and cost of developing cloud apps. WebAssembly microservices are executed in a secure sandbox environment on Fermyon, where they start in milliseconds instead of seconds and scale up or down almost immediately. Furthermore, because of its "create once, run anywhere" approach, Fermyon uses WebAssembly to enable its programmes to run on Windows, macOS, and Linux without recompilation or rewriting.

About Fermyon

Founded in 2021 by Matt Butcher and Radu Matei, Fermyon's vision is to lead the next wave of cloud computing. With the first cloud-native WebAssembly PaaS that enables developers to create better microservices faster, Fermyon is leading this next wave of cloud computing. The goal of Fermyon is to enable cloud developers to swiftly realise the things they are considering creating and concentrate on the code that adds value rather than the necessary foundation code.
