Traders worry about the market and the competition when they first launch their businesses. Still, Medusa, a Danish e-commerce startup that has been operating for a year, targets the JavaScript developer community and pursues e-commerce platforms like Shopify and WooCommerce with its open source alternative.
Sebastian Rindom , Oliver Juhl, and Nicklas Gellner, the company's co-founders, have been developing the programme with a client since it was first developed four years ago.
The Developers found that they had to use more technical solutions and tactics than they anticipated when assisting customers in scaling their business through the Shopify and WooCommerce markets.
One of the founders, Sebastian Rindom said, "You are constrained on how to build software for customers to see the scale." He added "The customer was bullish on e-commerce and wanted to double their revenue in a year, so we worked to figure out what platform they could migrate to make that happen, and Medusa was what resulted."
For retailers who wish to have more control over their ecommerce tech stack, the company's solution primarily consists of APIs that provide a "headless" option. This means that the shop front technology and the back technology are distinct so that changes and upkeep may be done to one without affecting the other.
Users can utilize a default implementation, which Ridom claims is the feature's Shopify equivalent, with APIs that link to a range of tools, such as payment processors, logistical tools, and customer management systems, rather than breaking in. Users can then incorporate a third-party tool or develop their own as they outgrow these.
Rindom explained that while existing marketplaces offer some fundamental APIs for integration, access to other APIs is necessary if you want to experiment with fulfillment, subscriptions, or a wholesale channel. Medusa, on the other hand, provides a more flexible design that lets users do anything.
It is evident that even Shopify recognizes the need for additional tools to help users get up and running more quickly. The development of the e-commerce industry, which will reach a trillion-dollar market within the next ten years, will be the primary driver of the future digital commerce software business.
Additionally, during the past six months, Chitan has funded businesses in the fields of fashion, e-commerce, CommerceIQ, and other headless commerce techniques and infrastructure. These businesses have experienced venture capital investments in these areas.
In a round co-led by LocalGlobe and Dawn Capital, which included investors such as Squarespace founder and CEO Anthony Casalena, Algolia founder Nicolas Desaigne, and former GitLab executives Scott Williamson, Medusa itself raised $8 million in preliminary funding. The business has secured close to $9 million in overall funding when combined with a pre-seed round from Seedcamp from the previous year.
According to Dawn partner Mina Mutafchiva in a written statement, a lot of the technology in this market, including Shopify, is more than ten years old, making Medusa an attractive investment.
With over $100 million in yearly sales already coming from its e-commerce operations, Medusa has established a developer community of over 2,000 people and nearly 10,000 projects on its platform in less than a year.
