Animal Logic, an Australian animation and visual effects business, has been acquired by Netflix, the two companies announced on Tuesday.
Animal Logic, a Sydney-based company with a second location in Vancouver, Canada, has worked on several projects for Netflix, including The Magician's Elephant and the upcoming The Lego Movie series. The company worked on The Great Gatsby and The Matrix, among other films, for visual effects. According to the companies, a global creative production team and an animation studio that will create some of Netflix's biggest animated film titles will be created as a result of the deal, which will increase Netflix's ambitions in the field of animation.
The streaming platform added, "We will continue collaborating with many other studios worldwide to meet our animated series and film demands."
"Netflix has been investing in animation over the past few years, and this furthers our commitment to building a world-class animation studio," said Amy Reinhard, Netflix VP studio operations, in a statement. "Animal Logic is a leading animation studio with innovative technology that will strengthen our existing business and increase our long-term capacity in the animation space to entertain our members around the world better."
Streaming firms now depend heavily on investments from the animation industry. With Disney, the market leader, increasingly releasing animated films exclusively on Disney+ or soon after release (Pixar's Lightyear will arrive on the service on August 3), Netflix is working to make sure it has a steady pipeline of animated films as well.
Several Roald Dahl's characters, many of whom are great candidates for animated adaptations, were also recently purchased by Netflix.
Although the agreement's terms were not made public, its completion is anticipated before the year is through.
