According to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Meta Platforms, the company that owns Facebook, is introducing a digital clothes store where users can buy designer garments for their avatars.
To begin, Zuckerberg stated in a live video stream alongside Instagram's head of fashion that virtual ensembles designed by fashion giants Balenciaga, Prada, and Thom Browne will be available for purchase.
They will be priced between $2.99 to $8.99, according to a Meta spokesman, which is far cheaper than the actual outfits by those designers. The Matinee ostrich leather purse by Prada, for example, costs $10,700.
Zuckerberg expressed his desire to turn the store into an open marketplace where developers may make and sell a variety of digital clothing.
"We're launching our Avatar's Store on Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger so you can buy digital clothes to style your avatar," Zuckerberg said in a statement. "Digital goods will be an important way to express yourself in the metaverse and a big driver of the creative economy. I'm excited to add more brands and bring this to VR soon too."
As Meta gradually connects the platforms and steers toward developing an immersive "metaverse" of shared, interconnected digital worlds where users may assemble, avatars have emerged as one means for {integrating user} identities across Facebook and Instagram, its other services.
Users of Meta's virtual reality headsets create avatars to play video games, exercise and engage in conference calls; however, the digital costumes will initially only be available on Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, according to the company.
Last year, the business revamped its virtual reality avatars to make them more dynamic and three-dimensional, and in January, it made them available on Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.
