Sustainability platform by Google Cloud to help enterprises with their climate goals

Sustainability platform by Google Cloud

Currently, one of the largest issues facing the planet is climate change. However, despite the fact that most companies make efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and promote better sustainability, there still appears to be a large gap between what companies actually do and what they say they are doing. Most enterprises are not sure of what their anti-climate change campaigns involve. And in an attempt to come up with solutions for the same, they tend to the side of greenwashing. Therefore, companies must understand the data surrounding their energy usage and what they can do to meet their goals.

In the first week of the Sustainability Summit , Google Cloud introduced a set of solutions that aim to build on existing climate change tools. The company intends to create a platform for sustainability that enterprises, organizations and governments can use to define goals, assess progress against internal and external benchmarks, and visualize progress toward sustainability objectives.

Jenn Bennett, technical director for sustainability in the CTO office at Google Cloud, claims that the company wants to give clients the resources to assess their current situation and address some pressing issues right away by utilizing the internal work Google has done. Sustainability is such a huge problem, she says. She further added that many things across Google, such as energy in data centers and food in cafeterias, impact sustainability and are interlinked in a complex ecosystem.

Google is announcing a suite of tools to assist, including an updated version of Google Earth Engine designed for business users; this technology was previously only accessible to scientists and NGOs. The corporate edition allows businesses access to advanced data by intending to create high-level visualizations that may demonstrate the influence of your company's raw material used on a specific area and how it cascades around the planet.

The company has also announced they intend to go wholly carbon-energy-free but not carbon neutral by 2030. This is, however, a tough challenge when one starts dealing with downstream product usage. The 24/7 carbon-free energy insights programme, which the business will make available to customers in a test programme, is one of the tools they are employing internally to measure those targets.

The company decided to share their observations and lessons learned along the way in the hopes that everyone, whether or not they use Google Cloud, can benefit from the large company's work because, according to Maud Texier , head of energy development at Google, if they tried to accomplish this goal alone, it wouldn't have much meaning. Texier added that the 24/7 movement would enable organizations to take an interest in grid operations. The main goal is to decarbonize the electricity usage for the better. He said that for the past ten years, the company has worked alongside their partners to gain the knowledge and insights to understand how enterprises can move towards carbon-free energy in the future.

Together, the announcements cover a wide range of activities. Still, the overall objective is to create a sustainability platform where Google Cloud can share what it has discovered while giving businesses the tools they need to comprehend and take action on their data and climate initiatives.
